After my son’s 1st birthday party we vowed to never again have a party that we couldn’t enjoy. My husband and I were both exhausted from the planning, cooking and hosting. Our baby’s first birthday party was not a joy! Now our main objective is to have a great time with no stress. Here are my 10 tips to a stress-free birthday party:
1. Invite children equal to the child’s age
If your child is turning 5, invite 5 children. This can be tricky if your child has a big family or lots of friends, but if you commit to this rule parties will be easy.
2. Do not cook anything yourself
Cater or go somewhere where the food is included. Plan a 3 item meal: An easy main course (ex. sandwiches, pizza, tacos etc.), 1 side and drinks. Cake for dessert.
3. Download a birthday checklist
I love the Real Simple checklists, they have an At Home and Away from Home list.

4. Ask a guest to take pictures for you
Hire a photographer or pay a teenager to take photos.
5. Make a Pinterest board
Get ideas based on the theme of your party but do not try to make all that amazing stuff. Make one thing, hire someone to make it or order it.
6. Hire a teenager to assist you during the party
They can grab this or that, so you can relax and enjoy the party.
7. Plan at least 6 weeks in advance
Your child’s birthday is not a surprise… you know it’s coming.
8. Try not to have the party at your house
Research party places, you will often find it is cheaper than having it at home. Also, they do the clean-up.
9. Limit same day store runs to 2 or less
Try to pick up as many things as possible ahead of time.
10. Don’t plan a large party every year
Alternate years or children. For example: Have a large party every other year, a small family outing the other year. If you have multiple children: 1 child gets a large party based on age and the other children have smaller events. Just set expectations so everyone knows and won’t be disappointed.
